Lipe Camping Zone, Koh Lipe Island, Thailand (400 Baht/night)
Upon arrival on Koh Lipe Island, I decided to take up lodging for a night at the Green View Beach Resort, The bungalows were fairly simple, made of wood and bamboo, and were right on the beach, but they lacked character. During my walkabout around the island, I stumbled upon a quaint property on the interior of the island situated equidistant from the two best beaches on the island. This property featured a dozen camping bungalows, known as Lipe Camping Zone. After a short discussion with the owners, Pao and Tan, I could sense how much pride they took in their property. The chilled out vibe of this place made for a perfect off-the-grid, budget-friendly experience.
Tan blasted the Thai version of Bob Marley, Job 2 Do, most of the day while I relaxed on the terrace overlooking sunset beach. He worked diligently installing solar panels to keep the bungalows lit at night. Pao cooked me perfectly spiced Thai dishes throughout my stay, the highlight being Aroi mak mak (very delicious). I appreciated the personal touch and the attention to detail of Pao and Tan, that made my stay truly memorable. The property was truly a hidden gem and offered a unique and authentic experience for travelers who seek for a more off-the-beaten path nook.
I witnessed the quintessential Thai charm as a group of weary trash cleanup crew members stood seeking shade and rest in front of Lipe Camping Zone. Tan walked out and invited the crew to come take a load off and allowed them to use the facilities as they recharged to continue voluntary cleanup. As each crew member departed, they smiled genuinely, clasped hands and bowed in appreciation, “Khop khun khap,” (thank you) they said. This showed the definition of a community, each doing their part to improve this beautiful island.
I was lulled to sleep by the crickets and waves crashing in the distance in my camping bungalow. I disconnected from technology for the day yesterday, no phone usage or picture taking. I simply soaked in the beauty of Koh Lipe Island.
I took a morning dip on sunset beach laying motionless taking deep breaths keeping afloat letting the ocean slowly carry my body ashore. I rolled around on the shoreline aiming to keep sand from getting in my ears. My inner peace continues to grow, if that’s even possible. I love the walking community aspect of Koh Lipe, haven’t seen a car in three days.
I decided to swim to another island offshore today despite an intimidating distance. Swarms of fish fluttering beneath, bright yellows and blues. I found myself in a precarious survival scenario during the last few meters as the ocean depth became impossibly shallow with razor-sharp corals and black sea urchins and their prickly spines protruding. I lay completely flat, arms outstretched. I felt stabs in my chest, thinking about Steve Irwin’s fate as I made the last few strokes ashore. What was the prize? I made it.
Thoughts for the day…
Perhaps pure altruism can be achieved when viewing others as no different than the self. One body continually connected with another.
Life consists of a series of multiple choice questions, each with permanent consequences, but with varying degrees of correctness. If you’re not sure whether or not to acknowledge a passerby, think otherwise, say Hi.
