Yamunotri – The source of the Yamuna River
As I lay buried beneath four covers in a guesthouse atop the mountain, I couldn’t help but marvel at the stunning views of Yamunotri, a sacred Hindu temple dedicated to the goddess Yamuna. The altitude had given me a slight headache earlier, as Yamunotri is located just over 2 miles above sea level.
Lulled to sleep by the sounds of the waterfall cascading down the mountainside
But as the night wore on, I found myself lulled to sleep by the soothing sounds of a waterfall cascading down the mountainside, the only sound to be heard in the complete silence of the mind. Accessing Yamunotri can be done via a 6km trek on foot, horseback, or, for the truly sedentary, on the backs of men. The hike up the mountainside is truly dazzling, towering over the valley with crisp, frigid water descending from the Himalayan peaks.
Celebrating 6 months of solo travel
This visit to Yamunotri marked my 6 month anniversary of solo travel, a milestone that filled me with a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment. I couldn’t help but think back on all the diverse experiences I had had throughout my journey, making it feel like several lifetimes worth of memories. I remembered reading something the night before that said one of the biggest regrets in life often involves regret for not traveling enough – something I was determined to avoid. This trip was a fitting way to mark this milestone, and I reveled in the memories, feeling grateful for the opportunity to explore the world.
